The history of Renaissance is basically the history of two branch groups, instead similar to the two phases of the Moody Blues or the Drifters. The original mathematical group was founded in 1969 by ex-Yardbirds members Keith Relf and Jim McCarty as a sort of progressive folk-rock dance orchestra, world Health Organization recorded deuce albums (of which only the first, self-titled LP came proscribed in America, on Elektra Records) just never quite an made it, disdain some success on England's campus circuit.

The dance orchestra went through several rank changes, with Relf and his sister Jane (wHO later fronted the very Renaissance-like Illusion) exiting and McCarty all merely bypast after 1971. The unexampled lineup formed round the core of bassist Jon Camp, keyboard player John Tout, and Terry Sullivan on drums, with Annie Haslam, an aspirant isaac Bashevis Singer with operatic training and a three-octave range.

Their outset album in this incarnation, Prologue, released in 1972, was considerably more ambitious than the original band's work, with extended implemental passages and soaring vocals by Haslam. Their discovery came with their future record, Ashes Are Burning, issued in 1973, which introduced guitar player Micheal Dunford to the batting order and featured some searing galvanic licks by invitee axeman Andy Powell. Their next track record, Reverse of the Cards, released by Sire Records, had a much more flowery songwriting style and was flooded in lyrics that alternated betwixt the topical and the mystical.

The group's ambitions, by now, were growing quicker than its consultation, which was concentrated on America's East Coast, specially in New York and Philadelphia -- Scheherazade (1975) was built around a 20-minute elongated suite for rock chemical group and orchestra that dazzled the fans just made no new converts. A alive album recorded at a New York concert date reprised their sooner material, including the "Scheherazade" suite, only covered small new ground and showed the radical in a reasonably lethargic personal manner. The band's next two albums, Novelette and A Song for All Seasons, failed to recover new listeners, and as the seventies closed tabu, the chemical group was running headlong into the punk and new wave booms that made them seem more and more anachronistic and unsaved to cult status.

Their '80s albums were released with less than world-wide or level national flash, and the chemical group split up up in the early '80s amid reported personality conflicts between members. During 1995, however, both Haslam and Dunford made attempts to vivify the Renaissance name in different incarnations, and Jane Relf and the other surviving members of the original band were reportedly planning to launch their possess Renaissance revival which, if cipher else, may hold back the courts and some trademark attorneys busy for a small while.

No cookie dough for Tim

HEADLINING a festival where you're rewarded with a constant supply of Ben &
Jerry's sounds like enough to make anyone salivate - that is, except TIM
BURGESS.

Bill-toppers THE CHARLATANS will rock the main stage at Sundae On The
Common in Clapham next month, where ice-cream will be coming out of people's
ears.

But after taking drugs for 20 years, The Charlatans' frontman has turned his
life around - and exists on a mostly wheat-free, diary-free and gluten-free
diet.
Imagine depriving yourself of the mouth-watering flavours when you're not
even allergic to them.
But thankfully the band have requested two sorbet flavours for their rider -
so Tim doesn’t feel left out when the rest of them are indulging.

Indie God Burgess said: "I am really excited at the prospect of playing
at this years Ben & Jerry’s festival, it has it all... the weather, the
line up and the atmosphere.

"The band have wanted to play there for a while now but due to other
commitments we were unable to so we are glad to finally be getting the
opportunity this summer."

Support for the July 26 and 27 weekender comes from the GUILLEMOTS, DELAYS,
CHARLOTTE HATHERLEY, FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE, BRIGHTLIGHTS
and THE TROUBADOURS.

'Hancock' going off before the fireworks

Many theaters will begin screening Tuesday night

Sony just can't wait to release its big Will Smith starrer "Hancock," so it isn't.

Most of the 3,965 theaters that have booked the superhero action film through the upcoming Independence Day weekend have scheduled "Hancock" showtimes beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

"It's one of those big popcorn-picture wide releases that is going to appeal to every kind of moviegoer," Sony distribution president Rory Bruer said.

But though that broad appeal might make it a no-brainer to unspool "Hancock" at least a couple days in advance of the Friday holiday -- letting word of mouth spread through the boxoffice weekend -- Sony's intent to include the film's Tuesday night grosses in its Wednesday totals is sure to draw some criticism. Records are tallied of movie openings of all sorts, including best opening-day performances, and "Hancock" is sure to post a big number Wednesday.

"It will probably get an asterisk," Bruer acknowledged.

Midnight screenings are commonly lumped in with next-day grosses, but it's much less common for a studio to do so with earlier showtimes.

"What time does a picture have to open on a Tuesday before it's considered a Tuesday gross?" a rival distribution exec fumed.

"Hancock" already has drawn some brickbats from a more predictable contingent: film critics. Some early reviews have been tough, suggesting that the film's flawed-superhero premise looked better on paper than it does up on the big screen.

Still, "Hancock" appears relatively critic-proof, with $100 million-plus over its first 5 1/2 virtually guaranteed.

Also, Sony execs are hoping the critical reaction will balance out, once all reviews are in.

"You're going to see some very good reviews as well," Bruer said.

Theater owners certainly seem stoked about getting the film.

"The level of interest in 'Hancock' is very high, and advanced ticketing has been strong," said Carlo Petrick, a spokesman for Marcus Theatres, whose 56 locations throughout the Midwest are onboard with Tuesday night showtimes.

"If this were October, it probably wouldn't be a good idea to do this," Petrick said. "But to do it in the middle of the summer, when schools are out and with all the interest in the film, I think it will do very well on Tuesday night."

Marcus is marketing the availability of "Hancock" in one of its Milwaukee theaters in so-called 4K projection -- the highest-resolution available in digital exhibition.

Once the weekend rolls around, the question for "Hancock" will be how much heft is left in its bow after the boxoffice cream is scooped off midweek. "Transformers," from DreamWorks/Paramount, opened on a Tuesday, July 3, last year and rung up $70.5 million during the subsequent Friday-Sunday.

Sony has a few different trailers of "Hancock" that it will run as TV spots throughout the week. One of the clips makes the title character's sizable flaws more apparent than in other marketing materials.

"There were various trailers based on different audiences and who we were appealing to," Bruer said. "When you have a pic of this magnitude, you don't have just one."

Amy Winehouse Returns To The Stage

Amy Winehouse [ tickets ] returned to the stage last weekend in England, quelling reports that she was deathly ill when recently hospitalized.Winehouse, who performed June 27 at a tribute to Nelson Mandela and June 28 at the Glastonbury Festival, was said to be in fine form at both shows and also in good voice. However, the weekend was not without incident; at Glastonbury, Winehouse appeared to punch a fan during her performance. No complaints have been filed and a spokesperson for the festival said there would be no investigation as Winehouse seemingly lashed out after a fan tried to grab her hair, according to BBC News.Footage of the incident did not clearly show what provoked the performer to lunge toward the fan.At Friday's tribute concert to Mandela, held at London's Hyde Park, Winehouse received the biggest cheers of the night, though she seemed nervous when she first took the stage, according to Reuters. At the close of the concert, she was joined on stage by Jerry Dammers, who helped organized the 1988 concert which called for Mandela's freedom when he was behind bars for his stand against apartheid. Accompanied by many of the evening's performers, they sang Dammers' "Free Nelson Mandela," which became an anthem for the anti-apartheid movement in Britain in the 1980s.The event, a celebration of Mandela's 90th birthday, was organized to support the statesman's HIV/AIDS charity, 46664, which was named after his prison number.

It seems as though the Twinkle Brothers have been around since the root of time, or at least the origin of reggae. Led by Norman Grant, the Twinkles began in the early '60s as a trio featuring Grant and his two brothers singing in the slick trio panache similar to that of the Melodians and the Mighty Diamonds. In the early '70s, the group hooked up with the influential manufacturer and transcriber Bunny Lee, a union that produced a number of reggae hits including "We Can Do It Too" and "Miss Laba Laba." In 1975, the Twinkles released their best and near widely known record, Rasta Pon Top, a rasta-infused, roots-heavy demi-masterpiece that included soul and church doctrine vocal stylings inside the deep grooves. Although hard-core reggae audiences were the principal fans of the Twinkle Brothers, Grant and company were systematically releasing chart-topping records. As much as this brought great success to the band, it likewise created a substantial amount of friction, as Grant began visual perception himself more as a solo represent and less as a member of a iII. This culminated in Grant's pursuit of a solo calling as more than of a MOR soul singer. It wasn't an nasty decision by whatever stretch out of the imagination, simply his solo cultivate wasn't nigh as good as what the Twinkles had been doing.

As if relations inside the breathe of the Twinkles weren't labored enough, in a off-the-wall move Grant joined the popular band Inner Circle in 1981 following the death of the group's original lead singer Jacob "Killer" Miller one year in the beginning. It seemed to his brothers that the career of the Twinkle Brothers was becoming secondary. But, as has been the case throughout their calling, the Grant brothers seemed to excel at mending fences, and within no time the Twinkle Brothers were back. Though their records are quite hard to feel (many of them released on their possess Twinkle label), they suffer recorded some challenging music. During the mid-'90s, they traveled to Poland (where apparently their records sell very well) to record with the folk singing Trebunia Family. What sounded like an improbable north in fact yielded a great, though widely unknown record, Twinkle Inna Poland Style. Then again, helping up the extraordinary has get a Twinkle Brothers hallmark.

Jay Z - Jay-z Set For Chart Boost After Glastonbury Success

Jay-Z is set to continue to prove the doubters wrong by following his Glastonbury success with chart triumph this weekend.

The rapper's appearance on the Pyramid Stage at the legendary Somerset festival had provoked much controversy with many critics citing his booking as the reason for slower ticket sales for this year's event while Oasis' Noel Gallagher said a hip-hop artist performing was "wrong".

But having wowed the Glastonbury crowds on Saturday night - including a tongue-in-cheek cover of Gallagher's Wonderwall - Jay-Z singles are set to climb the UK charts, the BBC reports.

His hit 99 Problems, with which he opened his Glastonbury set, is likely to shoot into the top 25 this weekend while Numb/Encore, his 'mashup' collaboration with Linkin Park, is also likely to re-enter the top 40.

Even Wonderwall has experienced a download sales boost, with the 1995 song set to re-enter the top 100.

And other bands who triumphed at Glastonbury are also likely to notice a boost in their record sales this weekend, with Kings of Leon's third album Because of the Times likely to climb some 40 places while their previous two efforts are also set to re-enter the top 75.

Elbow's stunning Saturday evening set is to create a surge of sales for their fourth album The Seldom Seen Kid, which should chart in the top 20 and the likes of the Feeling, the Raconteurs and Editors have also noticed increased album sales.
